Girl's Club: Knitting Madness!

CoKF girls love to knit!
The newly formed LitWorld Girl's Club has been going strong. Facilitators 'Teacher' Rose, Joscelyn Truitt, and Jackie Espana have enjoyed guiding and spending time with the girls. So far, the club has played many games to create a comfortable and trusting environment, talked about menstruation, sanitary pads, and changing bodies, the seriousness of sexual harassment, abuse, and rape and how we can protect ourselves and support each other, how to write our own stories, and most recently the valuable skill of knitting. The girls club welcomes Red Rose students and their friends from the communities, giving the girls an opportunity to make new friends and broaden their perspective. The girls were thrilled to hear that they received their own Girl's Club knitting needles and yarn, donated by avid and talented knitter, Joyce Zimmerman, the grandmother of Jackie Espana. The girls have discussed what knitting can give us, relaxation, a skill we can keep with us our whole life to make our own clothes, and a trade we can use to earn money. So far they have learned how to "cast on" their first row of stitches and how to do the basic knitting stitch. Every girl is making their own square as their first project. We can wait to post their final pieces!

End Violence Against Children! CoKF Campaign Expands

The 2010 Children of Kibera Foundation campaign, End Violence Against Children!, officially launched with the establishment of the Anti-Corporal Punishment teacher seminars (see previous blog posting). However, this week and last week, the CoKF team announced the start of the 2010 End Violence Against Children Poster Competition. Every Kiberan student, primary and secondary, in Kibera has been invited to participate by submitting a poster illustrating this year's theme. We hope to collect some amazing posters, which will be displayed at CoKF's Creative Arts Festival in October. Community leaders, such as the Chief, the District Officer, and the District Commissioner, are looking forward to what our students have to say about violence in their community. Good luck students!

POSTER CONTEST!

The Children of Kibera Foundation invites you to participate in the 2010 Art Competition!

END VIOLENCE AGAINST CHILDREN! PROTECT OUR CHILDREN FROM VIOLENCE IN SCHOOLS AND THE HOME

How does corporal punishment (caning, beating,

slapping, hitting) affect you in school?

How does violence in the home make you feel?

What would Kibera or even all of Kenya look like

if we stopped using violence against our children?

How do you feel children should be nurtured and loved?

Design a poster to show us your thoughts!

Participants must submit a poster that displays the theme: end violence against children. Posters should be designed to capture the attention of an audience by using bold letters, colors, and/or images. This is an ART competition, be creative and artistic but remember to make your message clear and bold.

∆≈ Posters will be judged based on artistic quality, creativity, and regard to the theme. ≈∆

Participants will be divided into categories of Pre-Unit–Class 3, Class 4–8, Form 1-4, and Teachers and Administrators. Top winners from each category will be awarded BIG prizes, including professional advertising of your poster!

Submit posters on or before Saturday, July 17th, 2010, to the Children of Kibera office at the Red Rose Middle School, in Olympic, across from Huduma Clinic. Must include name, class, school, and phone number on back side of poster.

Good Luck!

CoKF Girls Mentors at Hospital Hill Prize Giving Day

During our last CoKF girls mentorship Program, our wonderful mentors agreed to visit the girls at their schools to follow up on their progress and also to catch up on any issues the girls would like to engage the mentors on. Hospital Hill was the 1st stop this term and also it was the first time for mentors Rhoda Igweta and Aida Gathoni Njage to meet with the girls they mentor. Rhoda was also at hand to receive Lowry's certificate on her behalf, because Lowry had to travel for a Mathematics Competition out of Nairobi the same day. Thank you very much Rhoda and Aida for having time to visit our girls.
Having a great time Aida, Abiba and Rhoda. Rhoda receiving Lowry's certificate for the most improved student.

Abiba and Lowry before, Lowry left for the Mathematics competition.
